There are 197 countries in the world—more or less.

How many countries are there in the world?

Not everyone agrees, as the answer depends on what you are willing to "recognize" as a country. Nonetheless, it's safe to say that the answer is "about 200."

193 members of the United Nations
+ Vatican City
+ Taiwan
+ Palestine
+ Kosovo
_________
= 197

Review:

Vatican City is a sovereign state that has diplomatic relations with 177 countries; however, it has never applied for UN membership.

Kosovo is largely independent, but its membership to the UN is opposed by Serbia and Russia.

Taiwan is very independent, but its membership to the UN is opposed by the PRC (People’s Republic of China).

Palestine is not very independent at all, but many countries feel that it should be independent, and therefore they have offered it official recognition. Palestine’s membership to the UN is opposed by Israel and the United Sates.
