Prepositional Phrases

Prepositions are always followed by a noun or a noun phrase. The noun which follows a preposition is called the object of the preposition.

A preposition and its object together form a prepositional phrase.

Study the following sentences. Each of these sentences contains a prepositional phrase. (The prepositional phrase has been underlined). Notice how each prepositional phrase starts with a preposition.
