5 Basic Clause Patterns

There are five basic clause patterns in the English language:

1

equative (S=C)

subject / linking verb/ complement

2

intransitive (SV)

subject / verb

3

transitive (SVO)

subject / verb / object

4

intransitive (SVOiOd)

subject / verb / indirect object / direct object

5

dummy subject
(There is / It is)

dummy subject / the rest of the sentence

A typical "clause analysis" question looks like this:

1. Life is a big joke.

equative (S=C)

intransitive (SV)

transitive (SVO)

ditransitive (SVOiOd)

dummy subject (There is / It is)

In coming lessons, you will learn how to solve these kinds of problems.
