5 Types of Sentences

Simple Sentence = one clause on the top level.

I ate pizza.

 

 

 

 

Compound Sentence = two clauses on the top level.

I ate pizza,

and Bob ate spaghetti.

 

 

 

Hybrid Sentence = ½ simple, ½ compound = "A simple sentence with a compound predicate or a compound sentence with an implied subject".

I mowed the lawn and [I] trimmed the bushes.

 

 

Complex Sentence = at least one clause on the bottom level.

I ate pizza

 

 

because I was hungry.

 

Compound-Complex Sentence = at least two clauses on the top level, and at least one clause on the bottom level.

 

he rented the latest spy thriller,

and he enjoyed it very much.
